Born in Noakhali district, a prominent politician, wise lawyer, late Abdul Malek Ukil was born in Rajapur village under Sudharam thana of Noakhali district. His father's name was Late Maulana Mohammad Munshi Chand Miah and mother's name Mahroma Nurunnesa.
He obtained BA and MA degree in state science from Dhaka University in 1949 and got LLB degree in 1952. At the beginning of his life, he joined the Noakhali bar as a lawyer in 1952 and later joined Dhaka High Court in 1964. In 1946, he participated in the campaign for the creation of Pakistan in Bengal, Bihar and Assam. He was close to the great language movement. Because of the movement, he had to live on March 11, 1948 and February 22, 1952. He joined the Awami League in 1953. In 1956, Noakhali was elected a member of the Constituent Assembly of the Provincial Assembly as a candidate for the Awami League. In 1962, he was elected a member of the Provincial Assembly and was elected leader of the parliamentary party of the Awami League in the Constituent Assembly. In 1965, he was elected to the provincial council for the third time. Mr. Malik Ukil presided over the historic All Pakistan National Conference held in Gulberg, Lahore, Pakistan. At that conference Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman presented the historic 6-point program of the liberation of the people of Bengal. In the 1970 elections, he was elected a member of the Pakistan National Assembly.
Late Abdul Malek Ukil actively participated in the liberation war in 1971. He also visited many countries of the world as representatives of the Awami parliamentary party to create public opinion on behalf of the Liberation War of Bangladesh. Mr. Malek Ukil was elected a member of the parliament as a nominated member of the Awami League in the Jatiya Sangsad elections held in 1973 and 1986. In the first cabinet of independent country, he was the Minister of Health and Family Planning, Home Minister and later the Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad. After the misery of Awami League after 1975, he organized the party with the help of the party and in 1978 he was elected the president of the party. He died on 18 October 1987.
